The Talbot County Department of Economic Development and Tourism proudly joins destinations across the country in celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week, May 4–10, 2025. This annual tradition, now in its 42nd year, recognizes the critical contributions of the travel industry to the U.S. economy and communities nationwide.
NTTW underscores the travel industry’s contribution to U.S. economic strength, community vitality and quality of life. Nationally, the travel industry generated $2.9 trillion in economic output, supported more than 15 million jobs, and produced $190 billion in tax revenue—equivalent to $1,490 per household. In addition to helping local businesses thrive and creating jobs, tourism makes our communities better places to live by fostering vibrant cultural and recreational opportunities.
Tourism is a cornerstone of Talbot County’s economy as well, supporting nearly 2,000 local jobs and generating $317.4 million in visitor spending. This activity contributes $132 million in local, state, and federal tax revenues, underscoring the industry’s role in funding essential public services and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
“Tourism is more than leisure—it’s a powerful economic driver that fuels small businesses, supports families, and sustains our vibrant communities,” says Cassandra Vanhooser, director of the Talbot County Department of Economic Development and Tourism. “National Travel and Tourism Week gives us the opportunity to celebrate the people and places that make Talbot County a premier travel destination.”
Talbot County’s scenic beauty, rich maritime heritage, and cultural attractions draw visitors year-round. Highlights include the historic communities of Easton, Oxford, St. Michaels, Tilghman Island, and Trappe, as well as events like the nationally acclaimed Plein Air Easton Festival, which recently earned the Transactional Opportunities Award at the 2024 Maryland Tourism Awards.
This year’s NTTW theme, “The Power of Travel,” reflects the industry’s resilience and its role in driving future economic growth. In Talbot County, tourism continues to evolve through strategic investments and enhancements to the visitor experience, including the opening of the new Welcome Center at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, the addition of the state-of-the-art Prager Family Auditorium in Easton, and the revitalization of The Oaks Waterfront Hotel in Royal Oak.
“Not only does National Travel and Tourism Week celebrate the benefits of travel in our community,” Vanhooser continues, “but it also allows us to inform elected officials and local citizens about the industry’s influence in Talbot County, in Maryland, and across America.”
Talbot County’s travel industry supports a diverse workforce—from hotel staff to restaurateurs, retailers, and cultural attraction managers. It also indirectly supports sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and finance.
Beyond economics, travel has far-reaching benefits. Studies show it enhances physical and mental health and improves workplace productivity. Yet, in 2023, 32% of U.S. workers skipped their paid vacation—a missed opportunity for both personal well-being and economic stimulus.
“Tourism is the heartbeat of Talbot County,” says Captain Judy Bixler, chairman of the Talbot County Tourism Board. “It sustains our small businesses, showcases our natural beauty and maritime traditions, and brings people together in meaningful ways. Our community’s warmth, charm, and commitment to hospitality make Talbot County a destination people remember—and return to over and over.”
