Mark Perna, shown here as keynote presenter at the 2023 Talbot County Business Appreciation Summit, hosted by Talbot County Economic Development and Tourism, has partnered with school systems nationwide to better connect classroom learning with career pathways. His work helps schools strengthen career readiness and expand student awareness of future opportunities. This will be his second keynote presentation in Talbot County.

Talbot County will welcome nationally recognized author and workforce expert Mark C. Perna for two community events designed to help parents and families better understand how to connect education to real opportunity and guide their children toward a successful future.

Mark Perna in Talbot County April 13, 14

Hosted by the Talbot County Department of Economic Development and Tourism in partnership with Talbot County Public Schools, the free events will take place Monday, April 13 at Easton High School and Tuesday, April 14 at St. Michaels Middle High School from 5–7 p.m. Parents, families, and community members are invited to attend.

Each evening begins with an open house from 5–6 p.m., where attendees can explore academic programs, Career and Technical Education offerings, student organizations, and hands-on learning opportunities. Guests may tour classrooms, meet instructors and school leaders, and see how Talbot County Public Schools prepare students with the skills, experiences, and confidence required for success after graduation.

From 6–7 p.m., Perna will deliver a keynote focused on helping families understand how students identify their strengths, explore career pathways, and connect education to real opportunity. Parents will gain practical insight into supporting decisions about college, careers, and life after high school.

Attendees will gain insights into emerging workforce trends, strategies for identifying student strengths and interests, and the wide range of pathways available after graduation including skilled trades, certifications, and traditional college routes. The event is designed to bring clarity to what can often feel like an overwhelming process and to help students move forward with purpose.

“Every student has unique strengths and untapped potential,” says Perna. “When students and families understand how those strengths connect to real opportunities, everything changes. My goal is to help families see a clear path forward and feel confident taking the next step.”

Perna has partnered with school systems nationwide to better connect classroom learning with career pathways. His work helps schools strengthen career readiness and expand student awareness of future opportunities. This will be his second keynote presentation in Talbot County, following his first at the 2023 Talbot County Business Appreciation Summit, hosted by Talbot County Economic Development and Tourism.

“I invited Mark to speak in Talbot County because I know how powerful this message would have been when I was making decisions about my own future,” says Cassandra M. Vanhooser, director of Economic Development and Tourism. “The students who win are the ones who understand where they are going and how to get there. Our job is to help make that path visible and undeniable.”

These events reflect a shared commitment between education and economic development leaders to strengthen Talbot County’s future workforce by ensuring students are informed, inspired, and equipped to succeed. Dr. Sharon Pepukayi, Superintendent of Talbot County Public Schools, reinforces that commitment and the importance of family engagement in the process.

“We are committed to preparing every student for success in college, career, and life,” she says. “This experience will help bring that vision into focus for our families.”
