The Talbot County Department of Economic Development and Tourism joins colleagues around the state to celebrate Economic Development Week, sponsored by the Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA).
Economic Development Week in Maryland is designed to increase an understanding of economic development’s contribution to the State’s business climate, job retention and growth, the tax base, and the overall quality of life in Maryland.
“Talbot County is a hub for healthcare and a hotspot for tourism,” says Talbot County Economic Development and Tourism Director Cassandra Vanhooser. “Talbot is home to 185 healthcare businesses and 3,783 healthcare employees. Our tourism industry employs 1,986 people, generating $303 million in visitor spending and $120.1 million in local, state, and federal taxes.
Vanhooser says Talbot County is recognized as the best place in Maryland for small business owners by SmartAsset, with the number-one ranking maintained since 2019. SmartAsset is an online resource for financial advice, with researchers assessing the proportion of people in the county with small business income, how much business income those people reported, and the amount of tax a resident must pay on their income to influence the ranking.
Talbot County’s businesses forms a strong foundation for the community, Vanhooser explains. U.S. Census Bureau’s latest data shows Talbot County is home to 1,457 businesses with at least one employee, and 4,364 real estate agents, freelancers, and independent consultants.
“Small businesses form the backbone and complexion of our community,” Vanhooser says. “Our businesses, their employees, and the community deserve recognition for working together to build a strong business environment in Talbot County.”
